AX.25 Requirements

Requirements for AX.25 as a layer 2 protocol:

  1. AX.25 structure unique to individual links (not monolithic network).
v2.2 (with fixes discovered since publication) specification specifically excluding AX.25 level network layer implementations

  2. LAN architecture defined by network sysops, not users. Users define endpoints, digipeater owners define LAN topology/coverage.
    Layer 2 (NSR) Digipeater

  3. Discovery (push and/or pull) support.
Layer 2 (NSR) Digipeater with support of DISCVR alias

  4. Generic layer 1/2 interface.
To be determined. Possible adoption of a mix of v2.2 services and BSD socket services?

  5. Generic layer 2/3 interface.
To be determined. Possible adoption of a mix of v2.2 services and BSD socket services?

  6. Active support for new layer 3 protocols
Requires active PID management by an oversight group

  7. Support, if possible, for existing non-layer 2 protocols using AX.25. This may be restricted to simply allowing digipeating of those packets within the constraints of the layer 2 architecture.
